Chris roberts

guitarist & percussionist

Chris has been playing drums and percussion since the age of 10. His musical journey began even earlier, experimenting with his grandparents' piano and organs, and his father's guitar. In middle school, he joined the school band, starting on French horn before switching to percussion. By 8th grade, he was already marching snare at Epcot Center. At 12, Chris began taking guitar lessons from Fred Capitegli in Jupiter, FL. However, in high school, he chose not to join the band due to a requirement to participate in marching band, which conflicted with his summer plans and dislike for football games. Instead, he started his own punk band, playing guitar.

Chris got his best friend to learn bass and put up a flyer at the local music store to recruit a drummer and a singer. The result was his first band, which played around the West Palm Beach music scene. However, when their drummer moved away after his parents’ divorce, they held auditions for a replacement. Chris had just one requirement: the new drummer had to be better than he was—a low bar, he thought. Surprisingly, no one seemed to fit, leading Chris to realize that maybe he should play drums himself. He got an after-school job to buy a drum set and took over as the drummer. Two years later, Chris moved to Gainesville, FL, after a brief time in upstate New York, reuniting with his old bandmates to reform the band under a slightly different name. They played as many shows as they could in the Gainesville area.

While in Gainesville, Chris pursued an Associate of Arts in Music from Santa Fe Community College, then transferred to the University of Florida as a percussion performance major. During his time at UF, he participated in various ensembles and performances, including the orchestra, Agbedidi Africa (West African dance and drum ensemble), Jacaré Brazil (Brazilian ensemble), Marimba Ayin (Guatemalan marimba ensemble), concert band, and several student musicals like *Cabaret* (guitar), *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum* (percussion), and *Anything Goes* (percussion). He eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music.

Following his classical percussion studies at UF, Chris decided to focus on drum set and moved to New York City to study at the Collective School of Music. After two years, he earned a certificate of completion and received the Director’s Award. Seeking warmer weather, he moved to Los Angeles in 2009, where he has been teaching, playing, and recording ever since.

Chris has collaborated with a wide range of artists and producers, including VNV Nation, Sejo Navajas, Daniel Jimenez Afanador, the Insect Surfers, Surfer Joe, Chris Mullins, the M-Squad Hollywood Soundtrack Quintet, Smoke Season, Jim Wirt, Nomi Abadi, Davie Allan and the Arrows, and many others.
